Lot #1 System Package which includes blade sharpener and balancing wheel
I just received this system a couple of weeks ago and have since sharpened 27 blades with it. There is a very short educational cycle which is aided by films on the Magna-Matic site. The sharpener works great putting a "machine surfaced angle" on the cutting edge of the blade in short order. Since a number of the blades had been sharpened by other means previously getting the blades into the 30 degree angle at first took some time but subsequent sharpenings went quickly. Getting the blades balanced took some time. Getting to know just how much to grind in order to achieve balance becomes easier as you learn to watch how fast the blades rotate when placed on the balancer in horizontal position and then judging how much grinding is necessary. This is especially critical on the thinner, narrower blades as removing a small amount of material results in a larger proportional change in the weight of the blade. The thicker, wider blades of course are not so sensitive to small amounts of material removal. It's an experience thing when judging how much to grind on a blade depending on the size of the blade and the amount of material to be removed. I learned quickly and balancing is now proceeding much more quickly. I have learned to check the blade alignment prior to doing any grinding as you can waste a lot of time trying to sharpen a bent blade and the balancing system revealed a number of bent blades that a visual inspection did not show. This system has made sharpening a much less troublesome job. Sharpening used to be such an issue that a lot of time I just kept using the dull blades to keep from sharpening. Now it is not an issue taking just 2 or 3 minutes a blade. Mowing looks a lot better and the mower tends to ride smoother, not as much vibration. At first I choked a little at the price of the machine just to sharpen mower blades but I have since decided that it was money well spent. When you spend $15,000 on a mower just to cut grass to purchase this machine to make the mower work like it was supposed to was not such a bad idea.
